A Million Ways to Die in the West

Plot: After a cowardly sheep farmer (Giovanni Ribisi) backs out of a gunfight, his fickle girlfriend (Amanda Seyfried) leaves him for another man. When a mysterious and beautiful woman (Charlize Theron) rides into town, she helps him find his courage and they begin to fall in love. But when her husband (Liam Neeson), a notorious outlaw, arrives seeking revenge, the farmer must put his newfound courage to the test.

Synopsis: Disney’s dark fantasy film, “Maleficent,” starring Angelina Jolie as the title villainess, may be too dark and scary to be profitable, one Wall Street analyst wrote in a report on Monday.

The $130-million-budget movie, which tells the “Sleeping Beauty” tale from the perspective of the evil Maleficent, is set to debut May 30 and will likely result in Disney being forced into a write-down, Wells Fargo’s Marci Ryvicker wrote in a report.

Palo Alto

Synopsis: The deck is really stacked on this one. Palo Alto is a new film based on a collection of short stories by James Franco. It’s written and directed by Gia Coppola and stars Emma Roberts, Jack Kilmer (Val’s son), and Nat Wolff as teenagers in a “bizzaro John Hughes world” where Franco plays a soccer coach who is romantically interested in an angsty but shy teenager played by Roberts. Bored, good-looking kids having sex, doing drugs, and coming of age with a soundtrack by Dev Hynes (Blood Orange) and Robert Schwartzman (Rooney). It will probably be good.

Million Dollar Arm

Synopsis: Based on a true story, Disney's "Million Dollar Arm" follows JB Bernstein, a once-successful sports agent who now finds himself edged out by bigger, slicker competitors. He and his partner Aash (Aasif Mandvi) will have to close their business down for good if JB doesn’t come up with something fast. Late one night, while watching cricket being played in India on TV, JB comes up with an idea so radical it just might work. Why

My artistic career was ended by Godzilla-as a child monster-movie maniac, I stopped attending painting classes when the long-awaited film (the American version, of course, starring Raymond Burr) showed up on Saturday-morning television. So I take the weeklong run of the Burr-free 1954 Japanese-language original, which begins today at Film Forum, personally. Moms' Night Out

Plot: March 12, 2014 (LifeSiteNews.com) – You know the drill. Sex, drugs, graphic violence, and scandal – the hallmarks of a successful Hollywood movie. And on Mother's Day 2014, dozens of movies nationwide will be capitalizing on this model.

Andrew Thomas of Washington, D.C. said he “enjoyed the movie” and thinks it is “a good tool that can be used in outreach.”

“I thought the movie described realism as far as it relates to the church and people who are actively involved and have done a good job as parents,” Thomas told LifeSiteNews. “I think it was wonderful, and I enjoyed Bones. I think Bones' counsel was off the charts – a biker talking to this great lady.”

Bones, played by country music star Trace Adkins, gives protagonist Allyson profound advice on seeing herself as God sees her. She meets a charming man made of marshmallows who can’t quite think for himself, a tiny china doll princess whose bossiness is a cover for her fragility, and a

tugboat with as many personalities as he has pieces. Dorothy must help this group band together against the Jester, a wicked new villain who believes that all of Oz should be under his control. How will Dorothy and her new companions work together in a seemingly disastrous time to restore Oz to the place we all know and love?

Chef

Story: begins when Chef Carl Casper role played by Jov Favreau lost his job from a well-known restaurant of Los Angeles after declining the offer to compromise his inventive integrity for its controlling owner played by Dustin Hoffman. And when Chef Carl Casper don’t figure out what’s next he launch a food truck taking to the road and chasing his passion for the kitchen by partnership with his wife played by Sofia Vergara, his friend role played by John Leguizamo and his son.

Walk of Shame

Plot: Meghan is a reporter who dreams that one-day she would get a chance to become a news anchor. Thing goes wrong when she finds herself stranded in downtown L.A. with her phone car, ID and money gone. To make matters worse, she only has eight hours left to go to the most important job interview of her life.

Belle

Plot: “Belle” is inspired by the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), the illegitimate mixed race daughter of a Royal Navy Admiral. Raised by her aristocratic great-uncle Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) and his wife (Emily Watson), Belle’s lineage affords her certain privileges, yet the color of her skin prevents her from fully participating in the traditions of her social standing. Left to wonder if she will ever find love, Belle falls for an idealistic young vicar’s son bent on change who, with her help, shapes Lord Mansfield’s role as Lord Chief Justice to end slavery in England.

Belle is a 2013 British drama film directed by Amma Asante, written by Misan Sagay, and produced by Damian Jones. It stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Tom Wilkinson, Miranda Richardson, Penelope Wilton, Matthew Goode, Emily Watson, Sam Reid, Sarah Gadon, Tom Felton, and James Norton. It premiered at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival. It is due for release in the UK in spring 2014 and in the USA on May 2.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Plot: When this week's new releases came and went without a sign from Gameloft's latest Spider-Man movie tie-in game, people were confused. After all, the company had previously announced the game would be out April 17th. Well, they almost made it, as not too long after the clock changed to midnight and the calendar rolled over to the 18th here in the US The Amazing Spider-Man 2 [$4.99] finally did arrive in the App Store. Take a gander at the launch trailer.

As you can see, much like the first The Amazing Spider-Man mobile game, you'll swing and crawl around a wide open city doing super hero stuff like stopping crime and fighting off a cast of famous Spider-Man villains. I've played around a little bit with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 at this late hour and it's good fun so far, especially just swinging around a seemingly huge virtual New York City. There's a few more early impressions in our forums, and expect more to roll in throughout the day. Oh, and like Gameloft's other recent releases, this one requires a constant internet connection, so heads up.

The Monkey King

Synopsis: It was initially speculated that this adaptation was going to be more faithful to the Chinese literature classic Journey to the West, and would focus specifically on the first chapters from the birth of The Monkey King Sun Wukong to the "Havoc in The Heavenly Kingdom", but disappointingly, the story's amateurishly altered and with the utterly poor CGI, makeup and costumes, the film turned out like an obsolete children's TV show.

In this adaptation, the Bull Demon King (Aaron Kwok) is not Sun Wukong's (Donnie Yen) sworn brother, instead, he's the leader of demons who, after his defeat against the Jade Emperor (Chow Yun Fat) at the beginning, attempts to manipulate and trick Sun Wukong into assisting him in his war against heaven. After reading just this, I bet those of you who're familiar with the story would probably suspect that the outcome, where Sun Wukong is punished by Buddha in the end, would no longer make much of a sense (it's so unfair,

it might even be offensive to the Buddhists). What's most disappointing is that the film fails to depict the "Great Sage, Equal to Heaven" godliness and unmanageable nature of the Monkey King. The "havoc in heaven" is ultimately not as epically havoc and terrorising as I had hoped, and that defeats the grand purpose of the Chinese title. All the characters, including the protagonist, are not well developed, hence the lack of emotional attachment. The film also expects the audience to already know who the Guan Yin and Buddha are.

That Awkward Moment

Story: Women, amirite? One minute you’re entering them from behind, and the next they’re asking you just where this relationship is heading. Jason (Zac Efron) is so familiar with it he’s taken to calling the moment ‘the so,’ as in “so, what are we doing here?” Happily though he’s mastered the clean pull-out and sees no reason to

Labor Day

Plot: A love story about a brief and passionate romance between an escaped convict and a divorced single mother suffering a prolonged nervous breakdown hardly seems guaranteed box-office boffo, even for the weepie crowd. For reasons of his own, Jason Reitman, who previously directed some offbeat films like "Thank You for Smoking" and "Up in the Air," chose a rather obscure novel by Joyce Maynard for his latest effort, the odd, improbable "Labor Day."

(2) He’s handsome, forceful, gentle with children and a great dancer. He can cheerfully fix a flat, clean the roof gutters, oil a squeaky door, caulk a stone wall. He cooks with such sexual authority that, if he had a Food Network show, it would be called The Sensuous Chef. This estimable gent is also a convicted murderer just escaped from prison, and he wants you to harbor him for the weekend in the secluded home you share with your young son.

Jacky in Women's Kingdom

Synopsis: "Imagine a world where women call the shots, a world where women fight the wars, run the government, have the illustrious careers, and hold all the important positions of power. Now imagine being a man in that world. That man is 20 year old Jacky, and that fabled world is the Republic of Bubunne, a totalitarian

matriarchy where men, wearing chadors and bejeweled dog collars, are relegated to lives of domestic servitude. Like all members of Bubunne’s downtrodden sex, Jacky dreams of marrying up. All the way up. He’s got his sights set on the Colonel, daughter of the supreme leader. But if he is ever going to make

beautiful daughters with her, he first has to finagle his way into the Presidential Ball. With a memorable cameo by The Artist filmmaker Michel Hazanavicius playing a prostitute/rebel commander, this brilliant, incisive political satire unspools like a fairytale gone cruelly and hilariously berserk."

I, Fankenstein

Plot: Imagine the dumbest movie you have ever seen. Not just a little dumb, and not something that's just overly cheesy, but something that confounds you with its every moment. Maybe you have a standby pick for this sort of thing. If so, you might want to make a little room for I, Frankenstein.

This is special movie. I don't want to further cement my reputation as a guy who revels in awful films, but I, Frankenstein deserves a little more attention than other obviously bad movies like The Legend of Hercules or even RIPD and its weird infatuation with cumin and skullfucking.

I, Frankenstein is like listening to a nerd - a for real nerdy nerd nerd, not some squatty guy in thick glasses - tell you about a story they are writing, complete with totally ridiculous dialog, lame voices, and spit-riddled sound effects. It takes itself so seriously, and it thinks it is so cool, that disliking it almost feels like cruel bullying.

Once you imagine I, Frankenstein's text coming from the mouth of an overly confident fedora, absolutely every moment of the film becomes hilarious. But also sort of endearing. It doesn't have the same redeeming qualities one might find in Hansel & Gretel, say, but it's not a grueling, awful experience either.

Gimme Shelter

Plot: There's been a debate within the conservative movement about making good movies. Of course, the definition of "good" is subjective. Some think good means a movie with a powerful political or cultural message. Some think good means a movie that people will actually see.

Gimme Shelter stars Vanessa Hudgens (High School Musical), Brendan Frasier (Encino Man) and James Earl Jones (my favorite cell phone commercial, among many other things). It's based on a true story about a pregnant teenager (Hudgens) who runs away from an abusive home and lives on the streets until she finds a home for single, homeless women.

Knights of Badassdom

Synopsis: How to rate a movie that aims low and hits the mark? Should it be damned for its lack of ambition, or celebrated for what it is? In many cases, it comes down to goodwill. Are the movie’s modest goals a product of simple laziness, or amiable humility?

Knights Of Badassdom feels like the latter. The story of a group of LARPers (live-action role-playing, for the ComicCon-impaired) who face off against a real-life demon isn’t out to change the world, or even make much of a dent, but then neither are the people it’s about. Joe (Ryan Kwanten) seems pretty happy working at a garage, living in a room in the castle owned by his accidental-millionaire buddy Eric (Steve Zahn) and

jamming in a black-metal band—sorry, formerly black-metal, previously sludge, now doom-metal. So it’s a major bummer when his high-school girlfriend Beth (Margarita Levieva) decides she needs to date someone who knows where his life is headed. Fortunately, Eric and his stoner buddy Hung (Peter Dinklage) have just to thing to cheer him up: a weekend in the woods with a bunch of like-minded geeks dressed in homemade costumes and wielding foam weaponry.

The Nut Job

Plot: Open Road’s animated indie pic The Nut Job opened this past weekend and grossed $25.7 million over the four-day MLK Day holiday — a record for the best animated debut for a non-studio film. Now the sequel as been set for January 15, 2016. Will Arnett voiced a mischievous squirrel who plans a heist to get into his town’s biggest nut shop in order to help his pals in the park gather food to survive the winter. Brendan

Fraser, Liam Neeson, Katherine Heigl, Maya Rudolph, Stephen Lang, Jeff Dunham, Gabriel Iglesias and Sarah Gadon also provided voices. Peter Lepeniotis directed from a screenplay by Lorne Cameron and Lepeniotis. No word yet who is coming back for the second go-round, but we’re hearing those talks are already underway. Story: A high school security guard (Kevin Hart) tries to impress his fiancée's (Tika Sumpter) angry police detective brother (Ice Cube). When he enters the police academy, he thinks he deserves the same respect as seasoned officers until his soon-to-be brother-in-law takes him along on a ride to show him the difference between security guard work and that of a police patrol. Also with John Leguizamo, Bruce McGill, Bryan Callen, Laurence Fishburne and Jay Pharaoh. Directed by Tim Story.

For the past two years, high-school security guard Ben (Hart) has been trying to show decorated APD detective James (Cube) that he's more than just a video-game junkie who's unworthy of James' sister, Angela (Tika Sumpter). When Ben finally gets accepted into the academy, he thinks he's earned the seasoned policeman's respect and asks for his blessing to marry Angela. Knowing that a ride along will

demonstrate if Ben has what it takes to take care of his sister, James invites him on a shift designed to scare the hell out of the trainee. But when the wild night leads them to the most notorious criminal in the city, James will find that his new partner's rapid-fire mouth is just as dangerous as the bullets speeding at it.

Life of King

Plot: Finally! Cuba Gooding, Jr. is doing another movie! Yes, he's been in movies since Radio and Snow Dogs, but can you name on where he played a main role? Didn't think so. And despite the synopsis, the rating might sway your decision a little.

Jack Ryan Shadow Recruit

Film Synopsis: Based on the character created by bestselling author Tom Clancy, “Jack Ryan” is a global action thriller set in the present day. This original story follows a young Jack (Chris Pine) as he uncovers a financial terrorist plot. The story follows him from 9/11, through his tour of duty in Afghanistan, which scarred him forever, and

into his early days in the Financial Intelligence Unit of the modern CIA where he becomes an analyst, under the guardianship of his handler, Harper (Kevin Costner). When Ryan believes he’s uncovered a Russian plot to collapse the United States economy, he goes from being an analyst to becoming a spy and must fight to

save his own life and those of countless others, while also trying to protect the thing that's more important to him than anything, his relationship with his fiancée Cathy (Keira Knightley).

G.B.F.

If they refuse, their loved ones are shot. If they lose their match, their loved ones are shot. So they fight.

Abducted, they wake up in an underground bunker, where they’re forced to kill each other in unarmed bouts for an unknown audience via live video. If they lose or refuse, their loved ones are killed, too-no idle threat, as the women view these murders as well as each other’s fights via closed-circuit TV in their cells. None of them are happy to dispatch fellow prisoners -that is, none save Phoebe (Rebecca Marshall), a career criminal who thoroughly enjoys inflicting great bodily harm.

Divergent

Plot: (Welcome)I can understand there is a target audience for Divergent. I also expect Veronica Roth's novel from which it's based isn't nearly as awful as its theatrical adaptation, but let's get one thing absolutely straight... Divergent is terrible. There's really no way of getting around it.

I'm sure Roth's readers were able to make sense of the world she created on the page. A world in which a human society in a dystopic future has quarantined themselves from the outside world and divided into factions based on their personality types. I'm sure those same readers will find it easier to digest what is on the screen based on their familiarity with the source material. However, I don't want anyone pretending this movie offers up an explanation for what's taking place that makes sense in any way, shape or form.
